They have begun to install the windows in the student union. If you walk by the construction site it actually looks like a building (photos soon). Check out the webcam for live updates. We will be fully enclosed sometime late this summer if everything stays on schedule.

There has recently been a survey conducted on retail space in the Student Union. Students were surveyed on retail spaces they would like to see in the new Union. Results are still pending. During the summer we anticipate surveying staff and faculty as well.

Future staff of the Student Union will begin promoting the Grand Opening of the Union during SOAR. They will be talking with students on the services, programming, and features of the building. The hope is to get new students to UNC Charlotte excited about the Grand Opening in 2009.

On March 21, 2008 approximately 150 construction workers, architects, students, staff, faculty and dignitaries gathered to raise one of the final beams for the Student Union. The event started on Wednesday the 19th with many students, staff and faculty coming to sign the ceremonial beam.

During the ceremony the beam was lifted into place with a ceremonial evergreen placed on top. The evergreen will later become part of the landscape around the Student Union.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte currently doesn’t have what is considered a Student Union. So what exactly is a Student Union? The following was taken from the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) website www.acui.org

The union is the community center of the college, serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. By whatever form or name, a college union is an organization offering a variety of programs, activities, services, and facilities that, when taken together, represent a well-considered plan for the community life of the college.
