How is the Student Union being paid for?
The Student Union project is funded by Student Fees
Why do we need a new Student Union?
Currently most student activities are spread out around campus. The new Student Union is being constructed to serve the needs of our growing student population and expanding campus. It will provide the store, retail, food service, meeting and events spaces and technology that our students will count on to be successful while at UNCC.
Currently, the bulk of student programming and activities occurs in the Cone University Center. However, with the student population expected to substantially increase in the coming years, the number of student organizations will grow along with the need for more programming and meeting space. An extensive planning effort determined that the Cone Center could not be expanded and that the best solution would be to build a new Student Union.
Will there be more room for Student Organizations?
Yes, student organizations will be located in the Student Organization Complex (SOC) along with the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the Office of Student Activities (OSA). The SOC will feature storage spaces and work areas for student organizations. Also located on the same floor will be the Center for Leadership Development and the Multicultural Resource Center. Having the three spaces next to each other in the Student Union will enhance opportunities for networking, collaboration and programming.
Are there relaxation and study spaces?
Yes, space for this purpose exists throughout the building. One of the great features of the Student Union is the Rotunda space. There will be seating on the first and second floors, as well as a mezzanine level, providing opportunities to see and be seen. A piano lounge and art gallery on the first floor and mezzanine level lounge overlooking the Gameroom Lounge will provide additional space for study and socializing.
What kind of food and retail space will be at the Student Union?
The Campus Bookstore will be moving from its current location into a larger space in the new Student Union, enabling it to expand its selection of products. A new Convenience Store will also open, providing the campus with access to the grab and go items that will make your busy life easier.
There will be a variety of food offerings in the Student Union. A food court will feature many brands you are familiar with including Wendy’s, Starbucks, Mamma Leone’s, Zia Juice, and Einstein Bagels. Students will be able to use their meal plans in the Residence Dining Room which will feature a Marché approach to dining (numerous stations) where students can eat all they want. Finally, a sit down bistro will provide more sophisticated dining options served at the table.
Four retail/services shops are also planned. A survey of the campus will be performed in Spring 2008 to help determine which concepts will bring the most value to the campus. Check this website regularly for updates on this and other changes.
Will students be able to work in the Student Union?
Absolutely. We will start hiring students for the building starting in early 2009. There will be a number of opportunities available, so be sure to check back for job postings.
