Information and Resources on Legal Issues

Student Legal Services (SLS) offers legal advice, information, resources, and referrals for students in several areas of North Carolina law including:

  • Landlord-tenant law
  • North Carolina criminal record expunctions
  • Misdemeanor alcohol/substance infractions and charges
  • Simple divorce and child custody filings
  • Domestic Violence Protection Orders and No-Contact Orders
  • Basic estate planning (wills, powers of attorney, living wills)
  • Legal name and gender marker changes

Educational Presentations

SLS is available upon request to present to student organizations and academic classes to educate students on their legal rights and responsibilities under North Carolina law. SLS will work with student groups to tailor a presentation to their needs. Please contact SLS to request a presentation on an area of law of your group's interest.

General Eligibility

UNC Charlotte Student Legal Services, Inc. (SLS) is funded from the Student Activities fee. SLS individualized offerings are available to currently enrolled UNC Charlotte students who have paid the Student Activities fee as part of their on-campus, degree-seeking programs. Distance Education, Continuing Education, and any other enrolled students who are not required to pay the Student Activities fee are ineligible for SLS assistance.

Summer Session Eligibility

Students will eligible for SLS services during summer term if they paid the Student Activities fee for the Spring 2022 or Summer 2022 terms. Students enrolled in the Fall 2022 semester who will be assessed the Student Activities fee are also eligible for SLS services as office capacity allows.
